Season 12 American Idol Review (Winner Announced!) + Top 20 Most Memorable Performances of the Season

american idol candice glover wins american idol season 12 american idol candice american idol candice family

…and that winner would be…

CANDICE GLOVER!!

This is my third year writing American Idol recaps and, for the first time, I finally get to write “The right person won.”

The right person won.

There was a time when Kree was my favorite. There was even a week where I put Amber in my #1 spot (before she sort of floundered). But Candice has always been the rock of this season. She’s the most consistent. She has the strongest voice. She chose the best songs with the most variety. This year we were lucky to have a very strong top 5…but, despite that, Candice usually rose to the top. That is why, when I reveal my top 20 towards the end of the post, you’ll see she takes up nearly half the slots. She has been that good.

I haven’t been this satisfied and pleased with a winner since season 7. Dats da troof.

However, I should say some nice things to Kree. I meant what I said last week: I would have been happy if Kree had won. She has been a calm, consistent presence throughout the competition. Her spirit is full. Her demeanor is relaxed. She has a great, humble personality. (I found it really endearing that she allowed Candice to go last during the performance show.) If she sticks with country, I believe she’ll do just fine. Actually, I hope all the finalists find some sort of success or happiness from being on this show. It’s weird…I didn’t think this top 10 got along very well in the beginning of the live shows. But seeing them be so supportive towards Candice and Kree these last couple of weeks has been darn right inspiring. Despite all the negative press, these tykes seem to be having the time of their lives (more on that later). So…go them!

This season has been interesting. Despite it’s relatively low ratings, it’s gotten a lot of buzz and has been the ridicule discussion of every entertainment site. I honestly don’t hate this season as much as the rest of world does. Maybe I’m just happy that we got a female winner. I dunno…but I honestly didn’t dislike this season. I watched every episode. I anticipated every performance show. Clearly, I enjoyed the show…or else I wouldn’t be watching it. However, I DO think this show needs a major makeover for next season. Better theme weeks. More helpful mentoring. A new judging panel (maybe keep Keith, but definitely get rid of Mariah). I’d even limit the voting and shorten the results shows but…I know FOX would never do that in million years.

This show has bounced from slumps before. Season 9 still remains my least favorite season…but season 10 and 11 were comparatively better. I have faith in this show. It’s still a high rated show (technically). If TPTB want to continue this show…then I let them. But they need to work hard…or else their ratings will fall even lower. But I faith in this show. I certainly still like it more than the other singing competition shows (Sorry, Voice fans!)

But, enough about that…let’s discuss some of my favorite moments from the finale…

1. THE HUMOR - It was weird, and almost a little cringe worthy…but I appreciate that the show was willing to take such jabs against itself. I liked the skit about the girls sabotaging the guys so they would be eliminated one by one (the show’s thinly veiled way of admitting that they manipulated things so a girl would win, maybe?) And I liked the skit where the contestants made fun of the judges (particularly Nicki and Randy). I dunno…I laughed. It was funny. Kill me. The one part was a little too much was the “The Voice” diss. I dunno…a LOT of AI viewers LOVE The Voice. I’m not sure if they would appreciate that joke, much.

2. MARIAH - Yeah, she’s still got it. I adored her little medley. Just her, on stage, in a sparkly gown, singing her hits. That’s all we ask from her (literally),

3. AMBER and EMELIE - “Next To Me” is still stuck in my head. They both sounded great together.

4. CANDICE and JENNIFA HUDSON - That’s right. “Jennifa.” Those harmonies were sick.

5. ANGIE and FRIENDS - Those friends being Adam Lambert and Jessie J. Quelle sick!

6. KREE and JUDGES - Kree sounded really awesome next to Keith and…Randy. I always forget that Randy is actually a talented bassist. Maybe he should go back to doing that…

7. JENNIFER LOPEZ and PITBULL - What can I say? Her dance moves slay me.

And of course, the best moment was seeing Candice reprise her coronation song  ”I Am Beautiful” to a crazy load of confetti. Awes!

But, seriously, I definitely got choked up seeing Candice’s dreams come true. I’ve been following her on Youtube for the last year, hoping that one day she would get the success she deserves…I’m glad she got it.

Before I FINALLY list my top 20…I should talk about Randy a little. Even though I truly believe this is the right time for him to leave (and for the show to get rid of him), I will miss Randy. I don’t think he was completely useless. During the first 7 seasons with the original trio of judges, sometimes he was a nice mediator between the loopy/too nice Paula and the sometimes overly critical Simon. He was a necessary member of the panel and I’m glad he was there. Yeah, Randy wasn’t the most articulate judge on television…

Anyway…let’s close this. Here are my 20 favorite performances from the season.

20. Janelle Arthur “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again” (top 6) – A breezy, fun performance that showed Janelle’s personality well.

19. Devin Velez “It’s Impossible” (semis) – A performance that PROVES he has a beautiful voice.

18. Kree Harrison “Piece of My Heart” (top 7) – Sometimes you can show some real grit in a performance while you’re in pain.

17. Burnell Taylor “I’m Here” (semis) – Best male solo performance of the season.

16. Candice Glover “Ordinary People” (semis) – A solid, clean performance that propelled her to front runner status.

15. Angie Miller “Try” (top 3) – I was totally fist pumping during this one.

14. Candice Glover “I Am Beautiful” (top 2) – A great “FU” for anyone who has ever told her she wasn’t “commercial” enough (or some BS like that).

13. Candice Glover “I Who Have Nothing” (top 2) – The acapella beginning gave me chills.

12. Candice Glover “Satisfaction” (top 7) – One of the moments of the season where she really rocked out.

11, Kree Harrison “What the World Needs Now…” (top 6) – A beautiful, contemporary rearrangement that fit her voice perfectly.

10. Janelle Arthur “Dumb Blonde” (top 5) – If only more contestants this season took more risks like this. Task: listen to the Dolly Parton version…and then listen to Janelle’s interpretation. Exactly.

9. Candice Glover “Straight Up” (top 5) – Bububububye.

8. Amber Holcomb “Love On Top” (top 6) – A bubbly, infectious performance that gave us a glimpse at how current she could be.

7. Janelle Arthur “You Keep Me Hanging On” (top 8) – One of the best interpretations of any song  this season.

6. Candice Glover “Don’t Make Me Over” (top 6) – TAKE ME FOR WHAT I AM! Seriously. Gawl. (I liked this performance more than “Love song.”)

5. Candice and Burnell “The Letter” (top 7) – Harmonies were sick. Probably Burnell’s finest moment. At least he left the show on a good note.

4. Candice, Angie, Amber “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me” (top 8) – Sassy performance from my three favorite contestants this season.

3. Amber Holcomb “She’s Leaving Home” (top 9) – If Amber had taken more risks like this, maybe she would have made it longer on the show…

2. Angie Miller “Who You Are” (top 4) – An electric performance that was needed in an otherwise disappointing performance night.

1. Candice Glover “Come Together” (top 9) – Beatles Night was probably my favorite episode this season…This performance is just so much fun and so different from what Candice usually gave us. I knew if Candice could conquer this song, she could conquer anything.

Well…thanks for following me this season. I had a lot of rants but…I still enjoyed recapping the show. Let’s see what next year will bring.

Also…please PLEASE PLEASE support your favorite contestants after this season. Whether your favorite was Candice or even Lazaro…please SUPPORT them. We take “who wins” too seriously nowadays. What matters is the success after the show (just ask Daughtry). So seriously…support them (and, if you haven’t already, buy Jessica Sanchez’s new album…it should be doing better!)

Bye! Next up… EMMY TALK! Stay tuned for that.

Season 12 American Idol Results Review (Our TOP 2 IS ANNOUNCED!!!)

american idol

This is going to be very short because…I have a 10 page paper I need to finish by tomorrow noon (hashtag exam week…hashtag senior week! hashtag graduation can’t come soon enough!) This is also why I didn’t post a recap last night. I did watch the episode though. The hometown visits were emotional like usual (esp. Kree’s) and the performances were great (esp. Angie’s “Try” and Candice’s everything). So I came into this results show having no idea who would make the top 2.

All 3 are excellent. Like I stated last week, despite my sadness over Amber leaving, I felt this season gave us one of the most dynamic and evenly matched top 3′s ever. HOWEVER…I was really rooting for a Candice/Angie finale. And after hearing Kree’s emotionless “Friggin’ Perfect” last night, my feelings got a little stronger. Still, I came into this results show with a mixture of excitement and nervousness (both kinds of “anxiousness” according to the 1998 Parent Trap).

I definitely wanted Candice to make the top 2. She’s the contestant I’m rooting for the most. So when she was called out first, I immediately jumped up and shouted “EFF YAH!!!’” over and over again. The audience and the judges (esp. the judges) seemed pumped. Candice was understandably shocked. It seemed like the whole world was singing with a bottle of Coke.

And, at that moment, I figured Kree would be the one going home because…I pegged Angie for the winner. She had the most Twitter followers. She had never been in the bottom “anything!” She had a strong voice but she looked marketable. I mean, she was polarizing…but her fan base was strong enough to keep her afloat…

And then Ryan called Kree’s name and I was like…whaaaat.

It was definitely a shocker…and I 100% believe that Angie should have been in the finals with Candice. But…Kree has been great all season long. It’s an exciting, intriguing shock…and it’s not the worst thing in the world because Kree is amazing in her own right. This isn’t even close to when Jasmine Trias made the top 3 over Latoya London. This isn’t a bad shock…it’s an interesting shock.

It’s an interesting shock that makes me happy because…for the last 5 years we’ve had to deal with skinny, white, “attractive,” boy next door winners. I know this season has had seem relatively low ratings (it’s still a top 10 show…and it’s in its 12th season!!!) and I know this season isn’t “perfect.” But…it’s nice that the typical “American Idol audience” is embracing 2, slightly heavyset, mature female singers. It is truly astounding. It really gives me hope. It took some manipulation from Nigel and co. but…WHEN has the show NOT been manipulative? When it was pimping out the likes of Lee, Scotty and Phillip? Exactly. For once, Nigel used his manipulation skills for good. THERE! I SAID IT!

So…am I happy with this top 2? Inspired? Excited? Yes!

But…was this really and truly the right top 2? Honestly…no. I’m sorry, Kree fans. Yes, Kree was consistent. But Angie took more risks. She sang more uptempo songs. She sang more current songs. Her song selections interesting. Lately, Kree’s been putting me to sleep a bit. Angie’s been improving in this competition while Kree has been settling. Growing and improving is what this show is about…and Kree simply hasn’t been living up to that standard.

So…unless something drastically happens next week, I am whole-heartily rooting for Candice. And while Kree winning would obviously be a welcome change of pace from the last 5 winners…I will probably be a little bit disappointed if Candice isn’t given the confetti shower.

I’m sure Vote For the Worst is ecstatic though…even if picking Kree was bullshit.

So…Angie Miller got the boot. Very shocking. I believe she was singing her original song Colton Dixon’s “Never Gone”. She could barely get through it. She really looked messed up (in a smiley sort of way.) It’s interesting comparing her elimination with Amber’s. While Amber’s tears were more “I knew this was going to happen, but I’m still very sad,” Angie’s were more like “I’m just happy I made it this far but I REALLY thought I would win and I REALLY wanted to win but I’m still proud of those 2 girls but still…god dammit.” Just an interesting little ….

But I was very emotional watching this result show. I mean these girls have been so good. They seem so close and…I just feel the sisterhood this season. Maybe Burnell hates Devin. And Devin hates Nicki Minaj. And Curtis hates Lazaro. And Lazaro hates everyone who isn’t Amber*…. But the 5 females really had a bond this season (like the TPTB wanted all along).

*I’m just kidding guys. Obviously.

Anyway…thanks for reading. And, yes, I will be recapping next week.

PS…so…Randy is leaving. It was time. I think he had slivers of greatness (like when he was being brutally honest, ie. “That was straight up terrible, dawg”) but…it was time.

Apparently, TPTB are looking to replace the whole judging panel. I disagree with this. Keep KEITH because he’s normal and he hasn’t really done anything wrong this season. Keep NICKI because she’s honest and she clearly cares about the contestants even if she is a little wacky. And…yeah, you can dump Mariah. And then hire either Melinda Doolittle, Adam Lambert, or just a random unfamous person who is working in the music business and would know his stuff, like a pre-X Factor Simon Cowell. Keep the panel to 3. And we might have a good show.

Season 12 American Idol Results Overview (Top 3 Announced)

amber holcomb

Before we talk about tonight’s results, I want look back at the past eleven “top 3′s.” Let’s see how this season’s top 3 stacks up with the others.

Season 1: This probably would have been a solid top 3 if Tamyra had made it. Nikki was a cute underdog but she was clearly out of her league against the other 2.

Season 2: This top 3 was absolutely perfect with Ruben, Kimberly and Clay. In fact…I really loved Josh Gracin during that season so I even thought the top 4 was perfect.

Season 3: I know everyone LOVED the “three divas” during the season…but I honestly wasn’t a huge fan of Jhud until Dreamgirls. That being said, the “three divas” being the top 3 would have been better than Jasmine Trias making it. What bunk!

Season 4: This…is not a season I know much about (I know, ironic). So…I honestly don’t know anything about Vonzell. Next!

Season 5: Overall, this was a good top 3. Similar to Jennifer Hudson, I didn’t feel much for Daughtry while he was in the competition. Confession alert: Taylor Hicks was actually my favorite during the season. So…I dunno, maybe this top 3 would have been better if Daughtry had been in there for McPhee…

Season 6: Unlike a lot of people, season 6 is actual a favorite of mine (minus Sanjaya…although he was hilariously bad, unlike some other VFTW picks who were simply bad). I quite liked this top 3. But, I probably would have switched Blake for Lakisha.

Season 7: This season focused so much on “David vs. David” that the third finalist didn’t even matter much. Sorry!

Season 8: Ugh. What was Danny Gokey doing there? Replace him with the wonderful Allison Iraheta and we would have had the best top 3 ever.

Season 9: Season 9 sucked. Top 3? More like top 1 (and that “1″ was Crystal Bowersox.)

Season 10: Solid top 3 but Haley was CLEARLY on another level.

Season 11: Overall good top 3…but I still have very mixed feelings over Phillip Phillips.

So…I think I would say the most “evenly matched” tops 3′s occurred during season 2, season 5, season 6, and the last couple of seasons. Why the long introduction? Just so I could make the declaration that season 12, despite all its problems, has given us one of the strongest, most evenly matched top 3′s in American Idol history. I’m not saying this was a perfect season as a whole. I’m not even saying the top 10 was all that great. But these three girls remaining are (for the most part) the cream that have thankfully risen to the top of my mocha cap.

And I think this is a very diverse top 3. We have Candice who has an R&B Jazmine Sullivan thing going on. We have Angie who is a Miley Cyrus-inspired pop rocker, sort of a female Billy Joel if you will. And then we have Kree: the thoughtful, mature country girl. All three contestants have something great to offer. And…most importantly…THEY ARE ALL GIRLS. I know I know…we’ve known this for 3+ weeks now; but this season is going to give us our first female winner in 6 years. Quelle exciting!

So people can bitch and complain at how manipulative this show has been this season (because American Idol TOTALLY has never been manipulative before). I will be enjoying these fine ladies battle it out until the end. And, while I’m still rooting for an Angie/Candice finale at this point, even the thought of Kree winning makes me smile. I’m happy…

But, a few minutes ago, I was a bawling mess. I usually don’t cry during eliminations. The last few times I remember crying was when Haley was eliminated in season 10, Allison in season 8, and Melinda in season 6 (I also cried after Crystal performed “People Get Ready” in season 9 but that’s different story.) But when my little Amber Holcomb got eliminated, my stomach dropped. And then when she was trying to get through “I Believe in You and Me,” my eyes water. And when her father came on stage to hug her, I lost it. Wooh! Emotions!

This wasn’t surprising. We all saw it coming. Most people believed Amber should have been the next to go. Honestly, I still prefer Amber to Kree but…maybe it was Amber’s time. It was Amber’s time. She had a great run but, quite honestly, I have to compare her to Candice. Candice is simply the stronger, more experienced artist. So if one of them had to go…then it’s good that it was Amber. I wish Amber had grown more during her run…but maybe that needs to happen off the show.

But…she really was a contestant I enjoyed immensely throughout the competition. Some of her performances early in the season still stick in my head (She’s Loving Home – which is definitely making my top 20 list in a few weeks, Lately, What About Love, Love on Top). It’s very impressive that she was able to make it far despite barely being featured before the Las Vegas round. She clearly made her mark with “My Funny Valentine” (her first performance) and that’s impressive enough. Even though she’s gone, she will always be a member of the “original fab 4.”

So…where does she go from here? Who knows? I’m not going to sit here and pretend she’ll be the next Whitney. It seems like fewer and fewer AI finalists find commercial success post tour. But…she still did something a lot of singers would not have been able to do and that’s a reward in itself.

However…if/when she puts out a new single (maybe with the help of Nicki?), I’ll be the first to download it.

Anyway, I think I’m just going to end this post here. A few other things happened but I think everything I needed say was said tonight. See ya next week (…maybe.)

Byeeeez!!!!

Season 12 American Idol Results (Our Top 4 is Revealed…uh…what?)

american idol season 12

OK, this was actually one of the more enjoyable results shows of the season. So…let’s countdown the reasons why.

1. Without any dead weight males in the way, the group performance of Donna Summer songs actually sounded really good. Naturally, Candice stood out the most…but really they all had a chance to shine.

2. The Ford Scavenger Hunt video package thingie was really cheesy and corny and scripted…and that’s what made it hilariously entertaining. And it only got better when their mystery celebrity turned out to be…Matthew Morrison! I could maybe see Amber excited, but Candice…girl, she was thinkin’ I don’t watch Glee. Who this be?

3. PAULA ABDUL! WHAAAT?? That semi-random appearance just blew my mind. It’s nice to see that she, I guess, had no hard feelings towards the show that unfairly fired her (esp. considering she was on The X Factor for a year…BTW, I periodically forget that she was ever a judge on that show.) Anyway, Candice looked happy. The judges looked happy. I was happy. Happy days…is my favorite Barbra Streisand song.

4. Idol Family reunion! This episode actually featured a lot of old friends. First we saw a glimpse of Jordin Sparks in the audience which was nice (I loved Sparkle by the way). And then season 2′s Clay Aiken came back to perform one of his signature songs: “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” He sounded excellent and it’s sad that we don’t hear male voices like that anymore. It’s, I guess, out of style. According to Wikipedia, he’s the fourth highest selling American Idol alum (Ruben is 6th BTW). His first three albums did very well, but he’s been on the decline ever since. Oh well. I still enjoyed his presence…the weird Ruben Studdard joke towards the end was the only sour note.

Then we were unfortunately reminded of that terrible results show during season 3 when the three divas (Fantasia, Latoya London, Jennifer Hudson) were in the bottom 3, over the likes of Jasmine Trias and John Stevens (blech!). That was the night when Jennifer Hudson was eliminated. However, we ended up getting a follow up on Latoya London who, despite being wonderful that season, never had the success of the other two ladies. She gave some vague details on a new album, but it was nice to see her again and she seemed really excited to introduce Fantasia.

Fantasia (who, BTW, is the 5th most successful alum) premiered her new single “Lose To Win.” It was pure 90′s R&B and I loved it. She was passionate and emotional and, even if the performance seemed to go on forever, I still enjoyed watching her get into it. I honestly think Fantasia’s a bonafied success. If you consider her genre of music, she is actually still one of the premiere female R&B singers we have right now (and no, Beyonce and Rihanna are NOT R&B).

So now we had to get down to the results and, unsurprisingly, Janelle Arthur got the lowest number of votes…and she’s…going home WHAAAT? So…is this season going to end a week early? I don’t really get this. Honestly, by the time we get to the top 4…there’s no use using the save. It would have been nice to have seen these 5 ladies sing together for one more week. So…this result makes me scratch my head more than anything.

However, as much as I loved Janelle and her spunk and her spontaneity…she was technically the weakest of the girls. But…I really enjoyed on the show. She was wonderful during Hollywood week, she had some rough moments during Las Vegas and semis…but she really redeemed herself with “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” and proved that she belonged to stand side by side with the other female powerhouse singers. She was bubbly. She was sweet. And I’ll miss seeing her on the show. Y’know…Kellie Pickler is the 9th most successful alum. If Kellie Pickler can make a Gold Album and become BFF’s with Taylor Swift…then who knows what Janelle can achieve!

So…we are down to four. And…I’m not going to rank these girls…I’m just going to say one good thing about them…and one thing they need to improve on. So…in alphabetical order…

1. CANDICE GLOVER - You’re creativity has really come out these last few weeks. However, singing more current songs wouldn’t hurt. You’ve been lacking in that department.

2. KREE HARRISON - You are terribly consistent and reliable. However…too many ballads. You haven’t truly rocked out for us yet. It’s time to stand out.

3. AMBER HOLCOMB - When you hit those high notes, it’s absolutely beautiful. I know “Love on Top” wasn’t your most popular performance…but ya gotta take more risks like that. Your first album won’t be ONLY Whitney Houston inspired ballads.

4. ANGIE MILLER - Keep doing the Christian thing. Keep doing the piano thing. Keep looking like Miley Cyrus. Just try to connect with your songs more.

There you have it…a strong top 4. And I’m looking forward to next week. I esp. hope they take advantage of “Contestant Choice” and do something really interesting.

Thanks for reading! Bye bye!

Season 12 American Idol Results Review (Top 7 Revealed…my ranking)

american idol results

OK…let’s get this out of the way. Our very own Devin Velez was eliminated. And…I do have some mixed feelings about it. Devin has such a beautiful tone and voice. He never sang off key. He truly was a professional who appreciated his craft. His performance during semifinals still remains one of the strongest in competition, and I’m really glad he gave us a reprise of “It’s Impossible” for the the save. The fact that he’s gone and Lazaro is still in the competition is really not good at all.

However…I wouldn’t have used the save. And this isn’t an elimination I feel too down about. The girls are better than the guys this year…by a mile. So, it feels nice that the guys are being eliminated one by one while the fab 5 is still in tact. I mean, the only person who really deserved to be eliminated over Devin was Lazaro…the other 6 contestants IMO were stronger. So…I don’t think it was the right time to be using the save because there are still some really amazing singers in the competition. In fact, if this male genocide continues like it should, the judges might not even have to use the save…

The truth is…that Devin never fully connected with me or America. I think he relied too much on his voice and played it safe. He was going in the right direction…but even last week, it was too little too late. He’s a great guy. He took the elimination very well (I think he knew that he would be the one)…but I’m very glad the judges didn’t use the save. I may be in the minority…but I need that “Save” to be saved for Candice or Kree… or Amber or Angie.

I have to say though that the silver lining in all this is that Lazaro finally made a trip to the bottom 3 like he was supposed to for the last  2 weeks. I feel like America is slowly starting to realize… I don’t take back what I said last night. I really do commend Laz for taking a risk and singing uptempo (even though “For Once in My Life” is a song that literally EVERYONE knows)…but he will forever always be on the bottom of my list and he does not belong here. Sorry. Of course, I’m also happy that Amber avoided the bottom 3…but girlfriend was probably in the bottom 4 so she should still work hard…and sing uptempo next week.

Sad night. First real heart breaker of an elimination…but the heart break only lasted seconds for me…to you… dawg.

OTHER OBSERVATIONS:

1. It was nice seeing Colton Dixon back. He performed “Love Has Come For Me.” I really did like him last season. He’s not a HUGE success post-Idol but, apparently, for a Christian artist, he’s done pretty decently for himself. I love how, after his glorified video intro, he said to Ryan, “You made me look really good up there.” What to make of that…

2. I LOVE One Direction Republic with a passion. I constantly play “If I Lose Myself” on my iPod. Definitely the best song of the year so far. I just love how bold and dancey it is. Ryan Tedder is a genius IMO. And Katharine McPhee did a nice job singing along.

3. Keith Urban also rocked it and…he just looked like he was having a blast up there. The song seemed a bit too long but…I still enjoyed it.

OK…next week…I don’t know what the top 7 is singing next week. But…I’ll be watching! Uh…let’s quickly do my personal ranking.

1. KREE - She’s still my number 1 gal.

2. CANDICE - Actually…she’s pretty much tied with Kree at this point. These two are in a league of their own.

3. AMBER - No matter how amazing she is…if she sings another ballad, I may be forced to move her down. She should stand out more and take more risks. I feel like she’s (unfairly) being compared to Candice…and we can’t let that happen.

4. ANGIE - The performance wasn’t perfect…but still! I don’t understand why she’s so polarizing.

5. JANELLE - She REALLY stepped it up these last 2 weeks, forcing me to change my “fab 4″ to a clean “fab 5.”

6. BURNELL - The last great male left in the competition. He just needs to work on his diction…OK, my adorm?

7. LAZARO - He honestly sounds better when he’s not singing a ballad. He should consider singing uptempo for next week. Also…who the hell keeps voting for him?

Thanks for reading, lovelies. See ya on the flip side!

Season 12 American Idol Recap (Top 8 Perform Songs from the Motor City!)

american idol season 12

So, I’m about to watch the episode for the first time and I’m really nervous. I’m nervous that Lazaro is going to do a decent job tonight, thus guaranteeing another undeserved week safe. I’m nervous that one of the girls will uncharacteristically wobble and thus they will be voted off (Amber Amber Amber). This is how I feel. There’s really nothing Laz can do to convince me that he deserves to make it further, even if he gives his best performance ever (unless he takes a risk a performs uptempo…we’ll see). So, yes, I hope he gives another train wreck performance…because at least he would have a stronger chance at making the bottom 3.

do want a girl to win this season. Not only because the girls are undeniably stronger than the guys this year…but because between the last 5 seasons, a girl should have won three of them (I’ll say the girls right now: Crystal Bowersox, Haley Reinhart, JessicaSkylarElise). The blatant sexism on this show has gotten too far over the years. I don’t know why these 12 year old girls (the same girls who probably listen to Taylor Swift, Rihanna and Adele) feel the need to vote for the cute guy over stronger talent. I actually commend Nigel for “rigging” the show to ensure that the girls end up on top…but now it’s up to America to go further. We got rid of the last white guy, which was cool…but would Lazaro be a better winner? Honestly, between the two, I would have preferred Paul Jolley staying longer because…well…he mostly sang on key and never gave a bad performance.

Lazaro is very cute. And his story is inspiring. But if his fans really want to support him…they’d buy his album after his elimination. I think this show should be left to the good singers and…I don’t think someone (a GIRL yes) should suffer because his or her back story isn’t sobby enough. End of rant…let’s get on with the show.

Candice Glover: Shoot! They gave her the death slot??? F**k that sh*t! She sang “I Heard it Through the Grapevine.” I didn’t love this performance. One, I thought the instrumentals were too loud and sometimes I had a hard time hearing her (not really her fault though). And two, I feel like she didn’t “go for it” like she usually does.  I commend her for not going the obvious route and singing power ballad. Her voice is still crazy good and she did some really interesting things tonight…but this wasn’t a favorite of mine.

Janelle and Kree: They sang “Like a Prayer.” I thought this was a really nice performance. They both did well. I think Kree is a better singer but, honestly, I think they both did equally good here. Just a simple, fun performance.

Lazaro Arbos: He sang “For Once in My Life” (UGH! MY FAVORITE SONG!!…AND IT’S UPTEMPO). OK, let’s say some good stuff. One, it’s very very very nice that he switched things up. In fact, I would have preferred if the whole performance was uptempo (as opposed to that beginning where it was slow with a piano) but whatevs. Second…this was his strongest performance. I actually enjoyed this more than I cringed. He looked confident and not as sweaty as he usually does. He still had some pitch issues but, when one sings uptempo, that’s almost forgivable. Not as good as Scotty McCreery’s or even Megan Joy’s (one of the most underrated performances of all time), but I still enjoyed it because I like the song and the risk.

Janelle Arthur: She sang “You Keep Me Hangin’ Out.” I loved this performance, really. I liked how she took an old R&B song and not only changed it to country, but made it contemporary. She made the song her own and I think her artistry came out this week. She’s been improving week after week and any doubt I had about her in the beginning of the competition is rapidly disappearing. Other contestants need to take note. This is how you make a song your own. Oh! And she cried!

Devin Velez: He sang “The Tracks of My Tears.” This was a stronger performance than the last couple of weeks. He definitely made an effort to change it up with a jazzier song selection. Like always, his voice is so flawless and perfect…but I’m still a little bored with him. I feel like I’m tuning in and out of his performances. But he’s getting there and improving…but I’m not sure this is the performance that will keep him out of the bottom three.

Candice, Angie, and Amber: They sang “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me.” Standing O from the judges! I agree. I loved this performance. Candice definitely redeemed herself (although she didn’t have to do too much redeeming) and was most definitely the “Diana” of the group. Angie surprised me and didn’t stand out like a sore thumb like I thought she would. She had more fun up there than I’ve ever seen her have. If there was a slight weak link, it was probably Amber…but man, towards the end, those high notes…amazing.

Burnell Taylor: He sang “My Cherie Amour.” Silver Linings Playbook! Points off for getting rid of the glasses. Sometimes it sounded like he was singing “My Cherie Amorn” which was a little strange. This was a nice song choice (more tempo than he usually sings) and a solid performance. I always think the lalala part is difficult to sing so I think he pulled that off well. There were parts where his voice strained. And I think he still needs to work on his “vocal color” (different volumes and tones in a song). He has a great voice…but now’s the time to take it to the next level.

Angie Miller: She sang “Shop Around.” This was a rocky performance. One, like Candice, the instruments were too loud and drowned Angie out. Two, she clearly forgot the lyrics towards the middle of the performance. Her voice is crazy amazing…I disagree with Randy…I thought she was mostly on pitch. I like how she rocked it out and tried to have fun. The contestants tonight seem to be taking more risks so I can’t complain too much. But this wasn’t among her best performances IMO.

Amber Holcomb: She sang “Lately.” Standing O from the judges (including Mariah). It seems like the show really loves Amber because, if she wins or at least makes it reasonably far, she could actually be successful. She’s young. She’s pretty (those dimples). And her voice is bangin’! This was another stellar performance from her. I’ve become such a huge fan of her. I don’t necessarily think this performance was as epic as the judges made it seem to be (I think she has the potential to be even more.) But her voice is so smooth and consistent…I really want to hear more of her. (Also…I want to hear her sing uptempo.)

The Boys: They sang “Sugar Pie Honey Bunch.” Oh, this was weird. I don’t know who chose this song (cough cough producers) but this was just not good. This is exactly what each singer was thinking:

Burnell: “I remember listening to this song when I was little. I love it so much that I’m forgetting that I’m even in a competition!”

Devin: “Why am I between these two weirdos?”

Lazaro: “Even I know this is uncomfortable. Smile. Smile. Don’t forget to smile. Eh…I’m not going anywhere anyway.”

I blame the song choice more than the performers on the stage. Nigel really wants a girl to win this year…

Kree Harrison: She sang “Don’t Play that Song.” Interesting. I’ve never heard this before. Another soulful performance from Kree. I feel like she’s getting more and more comfortable on the stage and this was probably her most “alive” performance so far. Oh, and her voice is OOTW.

Overall, I was impressed with how much the contestants broke out of their shells. It wasn’t a perfect night…but I can’t complain too much when there’s so much uptempo tonight. Also, Smokey was actually a great mentor this week.

Best performance of the night: No one TRULY stood out…which is either a good thing or a bad thing. Anyway, I’ll give this one to Amber Holcomb (“Lately”), even though she sang a ballad.

Other stand outs: This was definitely a girls night with Janelle and Kree standing out in their solos, and Angie and Candice standing out in their group performance (not that group performances matter much…)

Who Should Go Home: I’m proud of Lazaro…but I meant what I said in the beginning. He was still pretty much the weakest tonight.

Who Will Go Home: Devin will probably be in the bottom 3. I’m not sure if he truly did enough to avoid elimination. I don’t know who will join him though. I would probably guess Amber (unfortunately) and Burnell. Candice was first but, like Kree last week, she has a strong enough fan base to stay out of the bottom I believe.

American Idol Recap (TOP 3)

OK. The show is playing on my television right now. It’s now time to get this party on a roll (Stefano). Will Phillip cough a kidney? Will Jessica show her sassafras? Will Joshua wail like Fantasia? Let us see…

Three rounds: Judge’s choice/Contestant’s choice/Jimmy Iovine’s choice. I will just be reviewing the performances. I will not be recapping the home visits because I mean, what is there to say about them? There were a lot of people and the contestant cried. I think I”ll just focus on the music and if anything out of the ordinary comes up, I might comment on it.

Joshua: He performed “I’d Rather Go Blind” chosen by Randy Jackson. Standing O from the judges (really guys?) You guys know I love Joshua…but I didn’t quite particularly care for this performance. I think it was pitchy in some places. I couldn’t understand some of the words he was singing. His voice is out of this world…but hopefully he does better than this for the next two performances.

Jessica: She performed “My All” chosen Jennifer Lopez. Like Joshua, she had some enunciation issues. But this was a very beautiful performance. Like Jlo said, her voice was very tender and she really never tried to oversing or anything. She was as smooth as butter. This song is very very difficult to sing and, for the most part, she conquered it.

Phillip: He performed “Beggin” chosen by Steven Tyler. I really enjoyed this performance. Great song choice. It was jumpy. It was entertaining. His guitar skills were very um…skilled. It was um…well…a great performance.

Round One: Randy says Joshua. Jlo says Phillip (despite not giving him a standing O). Steven can’t make up his mind. This signifies that the judges are pimping Jessica.

Joshua: He chose “Imagine” for his second song. This is what I am talking about! Such a beautiful performance. I’m so jealous of him because I love this song so much and I just wish I could sing with him. So amazing. He felt every word! His best friend, Hollie did too!

Jessica: She chose “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” for her second song (and Aerosmith song). Very risky choice, but I think she truly pulled it off beautifully. She’s never given us worse than “A-”…and, yet, this was still an “A”.

Omigod! Is this episode REALLY two hours? Is Ryan Seacrest trying to murder me???

Phillip: He chose “Disease” for his second song. Another cool performance by him. Will I remember it by the time he gets to his third song? Absolutely not. But it was good for him and he’s going to win anyway so who the hell cares?

ONTO ROUND THREE…

Joshua: Jimmy Iovine chose “No More Drama”. That was simply wonderful. He just got better and better tonight and this was definitely his moment. Even his fellow former contestants completely dug it! This is the performance that deserved the standing O.

Jessica: Jimmy Iovine chose “I’ll Be There”. Wow. Did Hollie not stand for Jessica? Yeesh. Someone’s jealous. Anyway, this was a very nice performance. It was cool as butter with some spikes of power.

Phillip: Jimmy Iovine chose “We’ve Got Tonight”. Well…it was a nice performance. But…I think it’s far from standing O-worthy. It was a little sleepy. Boring. Off pitch at places.

But, it looks like Jessica’s going home. Joshua is definitely staying and Phillip is a WGWG with the show’s support so…sadly, I’m predicting Jessica to leave, even though, IMO, she deserves to go to the finale and win.

Check back tomorrow for my results recap. Thanks for reading!

Quick Season 11 Results Review (Top 4 Revealed)

Remember semi finals week? Remember how excited we were for the girls? Remember when Skylar gave a lively rendition of “Stay With Me” (a song I never heard of before but instantly loved)? Remember when Elise gave a soulful cover of Adele’s semi-obscure hit “One and Only”? Remember how excited we were for these two? Well…guess what? They’re gone! Yep! Skylar Laine did not stay with us. She’s gone, leaving Hollie and Phillip in the two positions that should have gone to the previously mentioned two ladies.

I’m not going to lie. My happiness for Jessica’s safety is kinda overshadowing this heavy loss. I was afraid for her for a second. But clearly Phillip and Joshua are going to be in the top 2 with Phillip winning because his grin kills girls’ hearts. Forget about vocal ability, stage presence, song choices or the “risks” he’s been taking…it’s his little sideways grin that’s going to make him the 5th WGWG to win (well…that and his white penis.)

So, woo hoo, I’m not happy. Overall, the results show itself was entertaining. Jimmy Iovine making fun of Jessica’s semi-slutty clothing from the night before made me a laugh a little. Coldplay performed two songs which is good and all. But I could have taken one of their songs if the results show just shrunk to 30 minutes, already! Think of the high rating the potential 30 minute sitcom would get if they were aired after that, FOX?! Carrie Underwood, Idol’s most successful alum, performed some song that I’m sure I’ll dig in the next coming weeks.

But, damn, another week, another disappointing result. It’s sort of endearing to see Hollie be such a dark horse in this competition. She reminds me of a tiny, even more awkward Haley Reinhart…but Haley Reinhart she is not! And despite a good last couple of weeks, I don’t think she’s good enough to deserve that top 4 spot. And don’t get me started on Phillip again!

Anyway…let’s rank this!

1. Jessica Sanchez…choose songs of your age group and gender. It seems like you’re losing stock as Hollie’s gaining some. Next week, if things stay the same, Hollie will take your top 3 spot.

2. Joshua Ledet…I was hoping for a girl to win. But, honestly, he deserves this so much more than Hollie. At least him winning would be different enough from the last 4 winners!

3. Hollie Cavanagh…sweet girl but…gah! Skylar and Elise were BETTER!!!

4. Phillip Phillips…so bitter right now. Season 11 winner everyone!

Here’s hoping Skylar gets signed and gains the same audience that loves Miranda Lambert and Kellie Pickler!

Thanks for reading! What do y’all think? Will you readers stay with me for the next 3 weeks?

Season 11 American Idol Results Recap (Top 5 Revealed) + RankingK

So I’m about to finally watch the results recap. Ugh. I pretty much know that either Elise or Jessica (most likely Jessica) is going home so…I’m really not looking forward to watching this but…I have to. At least I’ll have 30 Rock‘s live episode to cheer me up, hopefully.

Something called The Queen Experience performs “Somebody to Love”. The lead singer had crazy, old school vibrator that I dug. The guitarist did a cool back flip while holding his guitar which I’m going to assume is going to be the most enjoyable thing about this episode. Overall it was pretty spectacular…but nothing will ever top the cast of Glee.

Next they show a video of the American Idol kids visiting the TMZ offices. So let’s run this down: Phillip is sexy. There’s a stripper club named after Joshua (Mantasia). Skylar is NOT dating Colton (again…who thinks that?). Jessica has over 200 videos of her singing on Youtube. And Hollie eats cereal in the bathroom.

Jessica and Elise are called up. That’s funny and interesting. Jimmy Iovine is back. He pretty much says that “Bohemian Rhapsody” was a mistake, while “Dance with My Father” was a smart choice for Jessica. Jimmy Iovine also bashes both of Elise’s song choices. Ouch. Jessica is declared safe. WOW! YAY! I seriously thought she was a goner. SO happy. Elise, however, is sent to the bottom…it wasn’t her strongest night, but she doesn’t deserve to go home yet.

After the commercial break, we say hello to a very hairy Casey Abrams. And then Stefano Langone performs his newest dance single “I’m on a Roll”. Y’know…I have nothing negative to say. I thought this was a fun performance and a fun song. And I really do like Stefano. I liked him when he was on the show. I wish him the best. And can you resist his smile? He even dances good. (Not “well”…”good”.)

Joshua and Hollie are called up. Jimmy Iovine overall praises Hollie but isn’t sure if she’ll stay another week. Jimmy also praises Joshua and says that there would be something wrong with America if they voted Joshua off. Joshua is declared safe while Hollie is sent to the bottom. I’m sort of surprised by that. I thought Hollie had a strong enough fan base. Oh well.

Katy Perry performs “Part of Me” and it looks like she’s sticking with the “military theme”. Again, I have no hate. Perry is a talented artist and I usually love her music and this is another song I really like. And she gave a great performance. Sometimes, admittedly, her songs “sound” very similar to each other (like “Part of Me” can be equaled to “Firework”) but…I still dig them.

Skylar and Phillip are called up. Jimmy praises Skylar’s Queen song, but dissed her “Tattoos on the Town” song choice. Jimmy didn’t have kind words for Phillip also. Whatever. Phillip is safe and will be safe for the remainder of the competition because he’s a handsome wgwg who just gained all of Colton’s votes. Nice.

However, Skylar is undeservedly in the bottom with Elise and Hollie (little more deserved). And for the first time in a while, a girl is definitely going home. Skylar is immediately declared safe. OK. So far so good. Will America make the right decision?

No. They did not. Elise Testone is the one getting eliminated tonight which pretty much pisses me off. The first elimination (besides, I guess, Jessica’s) that really give me a bad feeling in my stomach. Elise was one of the most talented contestants of the competition and she deserved to make it farther. I was hoping she would pull a “Haley” and glide onto the top 3 at least but…oh well. It looks like that won’t be the case.

Elise always had a tough time stabilizing a fan base. She constantly made the bottom 3. It’s a pity…but at the same time, the result isn’t too shocking. And, despite the fact that people unfairly say she has attitude, she took the elimination very very well and we got to hear her sing Zeppelin one last time before Fox cut her off because of time. I will always remember Elise as the girl who stole my heart with my favorite Adele song “One and Only”.

NOW…let’s rank the top 5…

1. Jessica…yup! Although…she really needs to work on song choice if she wants to win this thing.

2. Skylar…She hasn’t really done anything wrong. I think it comes down to the fact that I simply like Jessica’s voice more. But Skylar winning would still be great.

3. Joshua…consistent. Don’t blame him because the judges keep giving him standing O’s.

4. Hollie…How did she make it this far? Who knows? Dark horse, definitely.

5. Phillip…I’m just counting the seconds until he wins because he will unfortunately. I like him…but c’mon!

Thanks for reading! See ya on the flip side!

Season 11 American Idol Recap (Top 6 Perform Queen Songs!)ThST

Finally we’re down to our top 6. And I have to say, this is a much better top 6 than the last couple of seasons. While those seasons top six’s contained the likes of Aaron Kelly and Jacob Lusk, I am happy to announce that season 11′s top 6 features no undeserving train wrecks. They’ve all done well and they all deserve to be here. But now…we’re getting to the wire. So let’s recap this thing.

Will Joshua not sing a ballad? Will Jessica step out of her comfort zone (or something like that)? Will Elise smile? Will Hollie roll in the deep? Will Skylar stay with me? Will Phillip crush a kidney stone with his singing. Let’s find out!

Two randos from Queen who aren’t Freddie Mercury give the remaining idols some generic advice, but whatever, they’re famous so…whatever.

Y’know…anything that’s not really part of the actual competition I’m not recapping. So let’s just enjoy this Queen medley without any further insight from me.

Jessica: She sings “Bohemian Rhapsody”. I think overall she pulled it off. I enjoyed the upbeat, rock-y moments more than the more ballad-y moments (which bordered a little sleepy for me). But she took a big, unexpected risk and she did a great job with it. I could have done without the talking heads behind her though. And she went first (the death slot) which signifies that the show unfairly favors her. (OK, I’ll stop with that.)

Skylar: She sings “The Show Must Go On”. By the middle she really picked it up and did her standard “climax run” thing she usually does. I wouldn’t call it a bonafide “moment” but it’s Skylar, which means she never goes wrong, which means this was a great performance.

Joshua: He sings “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”. The judges give him yet another standing O (although Jlo needed some coaxing from the other two). I really love it when Joshua sings uptempo. However, America doesn’t, which means he’ll probably find himself in the bottom three again, unless he pulls out a big gospel number for the second half of the show.

Elise: She sings “I Want it All”. Her vocals are always great, but I feel like she might have lacked charisma, esp. in her eyes. They seemed a little dead. Like her voice didn’t match her facial expression. But, overall, another decent performance (of the night in general).

Phillip: He sings “Fat Bottomed Girls”. Every middle aged housewife is getting their phones ready to vote. Again, I’m glad he put down the guitar and just sang. In that sense, it’s good that he has more confidence to sing out of the mike. So far so good for Phillip (even though I don’t for this song that much…)

Hollie: She sings “Save Me”. This was a nice ballad from her. But I can’t say it will be as memorable as some of the other performances before her, but it was a nice way to end this Queen segment.

ONTO ROUND TWO…

Jessica: She sings “Dance with My Father”. At first when I found out she was singing this song I was like “why???”…but then she sung it…and it was beautiful. Jermaine who? Jacob who? Jessica was the real deal and she might have given her most emotional performance so far. A strong, surprising night for her (I don’t think anyone was expecting her to sing these songs).

Skylar: She sings “Tattoos on this Town” (I think). Yay! She pulled out the guitar (she rarely does it that it’s not nauseating). I thought this was one of her strongest performances. It was nice and breezy and comfortable to watch and listen. I simply enjoyed it (and the song…never heard it before).

Joshua: He sings “Ready For Love” (I think, again…why isn’t Ryan introducing these performances?) He gets another standing O. OK…this is getting a smidge ridiculous now. This was a very good performance…but the song was kinda boring. Song choice is everything man. For the first time…I don’t think he deserved a standing ovation.

Elise: She sings a Jimi Hendrix song or something (“Bold as Love”?). This was a weirdly hot performance. I liked it when towards the middle she kinda “sang talked” the lyrics or something like that. It was a bold choice and I hope it paid off. I agree with Jlo…she’s one of the best singers in the competition.

Phillip: He sings some Dave Matthews song. Anyway, I have to bash Jessica for a second. Phillip looks his most attractive while he’s singing…Jessica is totally wrong on that front. Anyway, this was a benign performance that I’m not going to have the urge to watch again.

Hollie: She sings “The Climb”. I thought this an absolutely beautiful performance. I mean I wish she would have chosen another Miley Cyrus song (like “When I Look at You” or “I Will Remember You”), but I still thought this was a great vocal. She’s still, honestly, the weakest female…but I can’t deny that she’s really trying to stand out and make it to the top, even though she continually makes the bottom 3 and gets criticized by the judges.

BTW…let’s break this down tonight. Jessica got 0 standing ovations. Hollie got 1. That signifies that the judges blindly pimp Jessica out.

Overall, this was an OK night. All the performances were good…but were there any true moments? I’m not sure there were.

Best performance of the night: Jessica’s “Dance with My Father” stood out for me…even though it’s admittedly lame that she chose a song that’s already been sung this season.

Other stand outs: Jessica had an overall strong night. Joshua’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” was good. Skylar, Elise and Hollie did much better with their second song than first.

Weak links: None, really…just some boring song choices.

Who Should Go Home: Phillip or Hollie.

Who Will Go Home: Either Jessica or Elise. Joshua will probably make the bottom 3 but he’s safe for now.

OK…Thanks for reading! BYE!
